A call to American orthodox Jews to unite for the defense of Judaism was sounded today by Rabbi Eliezer Silver of Cincinnati, national head of the Agudas Israel, at the second day of its third annual convention being held here.
Rabbi Silver asserted every effort should be brought to bear by Agudah to center attention of orthodox Jews in this country on the imperative necessity of building new centers of Jewish learning both in Palestine and in the new world. Such need, he asserted, is most pressing now that centuries-old Jewish communities have been destroyed.
Rabbi Benjamin W. Hendles, executive director, reported that the Agudah gave $21,000 for relief of Jewish scholars in Europe during the past six months.
