Police drove 200 religious zealots back into the Mea Shearim quarter yesterday afternoon after they stoned vehicles and slightly injured a nine-year-old girl in demonstrations protesting Sabbath violations. The zealots who usually vent their rage only at cars entering their quarter, marched into other sections of the capital yesterday to attack the non-observant.
Residents of a housing project occupied by followers of the ultra-Orthodox Agudat Israel faction forced the cancellation of a Sabbath taxi service that was supposed to have started operating yesterday to the Ramat Eshkol suburb. The group intervened with the Taxi Owners Association. The new service was intended to replace buses which are forbidden to run on the Sabbath. Similar taxi services serve other sections of Jerusalem and its suburbs on Saturdays. The taxi-owners agreed to abandon the service. It was not known what pressure was brought to bear on them.
