The Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada has issued a statement declaring that “under no circumstances may a synagogue be sold to a church,” and criticizing congregations which make any synagogue sales without first consulting prominent Orthodox rabbinical authorities.
The statement said that sales of synagogues may only be completed where-recognized rabbinical authorities have agreed to such a sale because of circumstances. In addition, it was pointed out, “when the sale of a synagogue is permitted in accordance with Jewish law, and in accordance with the approval of recognized prominent rabbis, the money must be used for the purchase of another synagogue. “
