A group of young students of Talmud Torahs and Yeshivath outraged because of the construction of a students’ home in close proximity of a synagogue caused a riot yesterday at the Jewish community house when officials rejected their protest and plea to have the students’ house located elsewhere.
On receiving the Kehillah’s leaders’ negative reply, the youths cut the telephone wires, invaded the offices of the kehillah, broke all furniture, destroying part of the library and cut up the oil paintings of departed Kehillah presidents. The aged car taker Bregman, who tried to interfere was badly knocked about, and the staff of the Kehillah was similarly attacked. Order was restored upon the arrival of the police, only to break out anew as the police withdrew. Six persons are said to have been seriously injured in addition to scores who got off with lighter wounds.
The attack on the Kehillah house caused the wildest excitement among the Jewish population, Jewish deputies, newspapermen and leaders of all intellectual circles visiting the office to express their sympathy.
