The OSE, JEWISH health protection society, will care for 1,000 Jewish children from Alsace-Lorraine, it was announced today following conclusion of an agreement with evacuated Alsatian Jewish communities which involve 500,000 francs additional monthly expense for the OSE.
The arrangement was made necessary by the continuing expulsion of Jews from Alsace-Lorraine by the Nazis, creating a new refugee problem for Jewish organizations in unoccupied France.
The maximum amount of capital which Jews expelled from Alsace-Lorraine may take with them has been reduced from 5,000 to 700 Frances. Thus, Jewish families arrive in the free zone practically penniless.
