Ossip Gabrilowitsch, conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Music at the eighty-fourth annual commencement exercises of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich. The citation of Mr. Gabrilowitsch reads:
“Ossip Gabrilowitsch, conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra since 1918, an inspired maker of music, under whose magic wand sorrow finds solace, joy is illumined with radiant beauty, hope and inspiration crowned with abiding assurance. Unswerving in loyalty to his art, and brilliantly distinguished in his career, he has contributed greatly to enable life and inform it with spiritual meaning.”
