Albert Ottinger, Republican candidate for the Governorship of the State of New York, took occasion to denounce what was termed a whispering campaign against his “good Jewishness,” in an address he delivered Wednesday evening at the Hunts Point Palace.
Reports reached the Republican nomince that stories were being circulated on the East Side that he was not a “good Jew” and that he “attended the Presbyterian church.” Leon Ottinger, the Attorney-General’s brother was on the platform when the candidate digressed from his prepared address, in which he urged support for Herbert Hoover and praised him for his tolerance, to declare:
“I resent the malicious slanders that are being made against me. We were brought up in proper surroundings in a kosher home, and I was bar mitzvah in the Central Synagogue.”
Judge Otto A. Rosalsky published a statement in the “Jewish Morning Journal,” in which the whispering campaign against Mr. Ottinger was attacked, Judge Rosalsky declares in his statement that the accusations directed against the Republican candidate that he had not taken an active part in Jewish communal affairs are without foundation. Mr. Ottinger took an active interest in the work of the Jewish Education Association and in Jewish welfare activities and on many occasions addressed Jewish congregations in temples and synagogues.
