Congressman Richard L. Ottinger of New York, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senator, Thursday sent a telegram to President Nixon urging immediate authorization of the sale of jet fighters requested by the Israeli government, in addition to whatever arms Israel needs to offset the SAM-2 and SAM-3 missiles provided by the Soviet Union. Mr. Ottinger stated. “The situation in the Middle East is deteriorating rapidly. It is clear that the Soviet effort to rearm and reequip Arab nations is upsetting the balance of power and has created a serious threat to Israel’s security. To maintain peace in the Middle East and protect Israel and prevent further Soviet military initiatives I urge that you immediately authorize the sale of the jet fighters requested by Israel as well as whatever arms the Israeli government needs to offset the SAM-2 and SAM-3 missiles provided and apparently operated by the Soviet Union.”
