Saint Judes Church at Commercial Street, Whitechapel, adjourning Toynbee Hall, held its last service last night.
The church was being closed, the Rector said, not because of lack of devotion, but because the Gentiles are outnumbered by the Jews forty to one. Like other churches in the East End, the St. Judes Church was suffering from lack of attendance. In this Parish, he said, there were 8,000 Jews and 200 Gentiles, with the Jews steadily increasing in number. The Rector said that the last vicars complained of the same “heart-breaking experience.”
