More than 1,000 Syrian Jew–the majority of whom plan to settle permanently in Lebanon–have arrived in Lebanon following the lifting of travel restrictions for Jews between Syria and Lebanon, it was revealed here today in reports from Beirut. Some of the 1,000 Syrian Jews who have arrived in Lebanon wish to proceed to Israel or to the United States, the Beirut reports added.
At the same time, the dispatches noted, all Jews living in the Syrian city of Aleppo–which constitutes one of the most ancient Jewish communities in the world–are preparing to leave their homes, as are many Lebanese Jews. Most of the Aleppo and Lebanese Jews seeking to leave their present homes, plan to go to Israel.
Earlier, it was revealed that the new Syrian ruler–Gen. Husni Zaim–has abolished all restrictions on the movement of Jews within Syria and has allowed Syrian Jews to emigrate, but only to Lebanon. The Syrian ruler also lifted restrictions on the sale of property by Jews.
