More than a score of leading communities throughout the country have gone over the top in record campaigns in behalf of the United Jewish Appeal for Refugees and Overseas Needs, it was announced today by Rabbi Jonah B. Wise, national chairman.
Appointment of a five-man allocations committee to divide a substantial portion of the funds raised among the constituent agencies of the campaign was also announced. The committee, which will be called upon to determine allotment of all funds raised by the United Jewish Appeal above a fixed sum to be distributed according to a pre arranged formula, will consist of the following: Rabbi Solomon Goldman, co-chairman of the United Jewish Appeal and Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, national chairman representing the United Palestine Appeal; Henry Ittleson, chairman of the Greater New York campaign of the United Jewish Appeal; Albert Lasker, representing the Joint Distribution Committee; Louis E. Kirstein, honorary chairman of the national drive and chairman of the Boston campaign.
Meanwhile, the national bodies of orthodox, conservative and reform congregations and rabbis throughout the United States have called upon American Jewry to dedicate itself to the U.J.A. campaign. In letters addressed to the national chairman, Robert P. Goldman, president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, Rabbi Max C. Currick, president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, William Weiss, president of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America and Rabbi David de Sola Pool, president of the Synagogue Council of America, urged a united response to the drive.
