More than 250,000 volumes of Judaica and Hebraica and 10,000 ceremonial objects, representing part of the Nazi loot from Jewish libraries, synagogues and museums in Europe, have been recovered and shipped out of Germany during the past year, it was announced last night by Prof. Salo W. Baron of Columbia University, president of the Jewish Cultural Reconstruction, Inc.
In 1947, the J.C.R.–an offspring of a research organization formed by the Conference on Jewish Relations at the end of the war for the purpose of recovering Jewish cultural treasures looted by the Nazis–was founded and affiliated with the Jewish Restitution Successor Organization. In February, 1949, the J.C.R. was officially recognized as the trustee for all unidentifiable cultural Jewish property placed under the custodianship of the military government and stored in the Offenbach depot in Germany.
