Over 40,000 veterans of the Haganah and Palmach gathered on the green lawns of Tel Aviv’s Yarkon Park in a nostalgic “happening,” looking back to their fighting days in the pre-State underground army. The rally was organized by Moshe Rivlin, Jewish National Fund leader and chairman of the Haganah Veterans Association, under the slogan: “60 Years Hagannah, 40 Years Palmach.” The Haganah, defense force of the pre-Israel Jewish Agency and Vaad Leumi, was formed in 1921. The Palmach, its strike force, was formed in 1941. The white-shirted men and women are now in their 60’s and 70’s.
