More than 1,000 Chassidim welcomed the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Joseph Jacob Schneerson, upon his arrival with his family today on the S.S. Drottingholm. Rabbi Schneerson escaped from Poland some weeks after the Nazi conquest and had been living in Riga, Latvia.
A group of cantors sang Chassidic songs of praise as the steamer bearing Rabbi Schneerson, who has a world-wide following, approached the pier. The rabbi who is 60, was accompanied by his wife, a son-in-law, Rabbi Samarius Gourary, and his personal secretary, Dr. Chaim Lieberman. He intends to make his home in the United States.
