The City Council of Oxford voted today to deny a permit sought by Sir Oswald Mosley for a meeting he wanted to hold in the Oxford Town Hall.
The leader of the British fascist movement was backed in his request by one member of the Council, Mrs. Olive Gibbs. She held that the permit should be granted because, she said, “since fascism stands for the suppression of freedom and for political, religious and racial discrimination, to suppress their freedom is a move in their direction.” “Let them have the Town Hall,” she said, “and let the people of Oxford show their contempt by staying away.” The majority of the Council voted, however, to refuse a permit.
