The Association of Master Painters is no longer recognized by the Brotherhood of Painters, Paper-Hangers and Decorators, and the union will only negotiate with the paint employers individually, Philip M. Zausner, executive secretary of the Brotherhood, declared when the deadline of the ultimatum given the employers expired yesterday morning.
Philip H. Gladstone, chairman of the strike committee of the Masters Association, refused to comment on this stand, and said there had been no further developments toward the settlement of the strike.
The ultimatum, which expired yesterday morning, was voted unanimously at a mass meeting of the painters Monday night at Mecca Temple. The resolution stated that if the union’s demands were not met within forty-eight hours of the meeting (yesterday morning) the employers’ organization would no longer be recognized, and striking painters would deal directly with individual employers.
All week, officials of the Association of Master Painters and Decorators have refused to take the ultimatum seriously.
