While thousands of Arabs from Syria are pouring into Palestine every day illegally and on seasonal permits, the Palestine government today demanded that the government of Syria see to it that Syrian Jews proceeding to Transjordan be supplied with special passports to prevent their entry from Transjordan to Palestine.
In putting forward this demand, the Palestine government stated that Syrian Jews going to Transjordan are proceeding chiefly to the Transjordan resort of Hamageder, which is in the vicinity of the Jordan River, right on the Palestine border. It is for the purpose of Palestine immigration control that such passports are essential for Syrian Jews, the Palestine government points out in its memorandum to the Syrian government.
It has been estimated that approximately 60,000 Arabs from Syria entered Palestine within the past year. The Governor of the Syrian province of Hauran, in a press interview, admitted that from his district about 35,000 Arabs had left for Palestine as a result of bad crops. Many Arabs also entered Palestine from Damascus and other parts of Syria.
