The Palestine Liberation Organization — which is bent on overthrowing King Hussein of Jordan and on “marching” on Israel — is preparing to go underground in Jordan both for the purpose of bringing about the downfall of Hussein and directing commando operations in Israel, it was reported today in a cable from Beirut published in the press here. The members of the PLO are all Arab refugees.
At the same time it was reported here from Amman, capital of Jordan, that three Syrian soldiers crossed the border into Jordan this morning and shot a Jordanian security guard to death. The Jordanian-Syrian border is now heavily guarded by Jordanian border police because of the open incitement by the leftist Syrian government against the Jordanian ruler, accusing him of preventing Arabs from fighting Israel.
The reorganized Jordanian Government sent a new note today to the Arab League in Cairo on the decision taken at the Arab Defense Council meeting earlier this month to station Iraqi and Saudi Arabian troops in Jordan near the Israel frontier. The contents of this new note were not known, but it is known that the King of Jordan is not anxious to have foreign Arab troops in his country. The king had made it a condition that Egypt must order the United Nations Emergency Force — which stands in Egypt at the border with Israel — out of Egyptian territory before Jordan will admit foreign Arab troops into its territory. This, it is assumed here, Egypt will hardly do.
