Archeology in Palestine is promoting international accord, Dr. W. F. Albright, director of the American School of Oriental Research of Jerusalem, said in a lecture before the Archeological Society of Washington.
American Zionists, French, German and British scholars are working side by side in a friendly fashion to advance the cause of both historical research and political amity, Dr. Albright declared. Results in the past season’s excavations disclosed the great progress archeology has made within the past few years as an exact science and, confirmation of considerable Biblical history which has hitherto been regarded with some skepticism, the speaker said. Dr. Albright dealt with his recent excavations at the Biblical city of Kirjathsepher.
HIAS BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING ELECTS OFFICERS
At a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society held yesterday at its headquarters, 425 Lafayette Street, Abraham Herman was re-elected president for the year 1927-28. Leon Kamaiky, Albert Rosenblatt and Max Meyerson were re-elected as vice-presidents and Morris Weinberg was elected to the same office.
Other officers chosen are as follows: Harry Fischel was re-elected as treasurer and Aaron Benjamin was elected honorary secretary. Adolph Copeland, chairman of the Hias branch in Chicago. Howard S. Levy, chairman of the Hias branch in Philadelphia, Israel Silberstein, chairman of the Hias branch in Baltimore. Harris Poorvu, chairman of the Hias branch in Boston, Leo A. Schwabacher, chairman of the Hias branch in San Francisco were also made vice-presidents of the parent organization.
Temple Israel of Minneapolis, Minn., has broken ground for the building of its new edifice. The new structure will house an auditorium seating 1,200, a community center, gymnasium, Social Service rooms, and a Religious School, with provision for 450 children. The dedication will take place next fall, at which time the Fiftieth Anniversary of the congregation will be celebrated. Rabbi Albert G. Minda has been rabbi of the congregation since 1922.
An appeal to parents to contribute to the Hebrew Union College Scholarship Fund in honor of the confirmation of their children is urged in a letter issued by Mrs. Joseph R. Stoltz, chairman of the Scholarship Committee of the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods.
Rabbi Moses J. S. Abels will be installed as Rabbi of Temple Emanu-El of Boro Park, 14th Avenue and 49th Street, Brooklyn, on Sunday afternoon Isaac Ipp is president of the Congregation.
Newport News. Va., will launch its campaign for the United Palestine Appeal on Sunday. The quota for Newport News is $2,000. Rabbi Louis J. Schwefel of Washington, will be the principal speaker at the opening meeting. Theodore Beskin is chairman of the campaign.
Roanoke, Va., launches its campaign on Monday for a quota of $3,500. N. W. Schlossberg is chairman of the campaign; Joe Spigel, Treasurer, and Rabbi M. J. Friedman, Secretary.
