Chief Rabbi Herzog returned here today from Turkey satisfied with the results of his efforts to arrange rescue facilities for Jews in occupied countries.
“Though, for obvious reasons, I cannot disclose much of my work and achievements in Turkey, I am glad to state that I am satisfied with the outcome of my month’s stay there,” he told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
The Chief Rabbi indicated that he met with high Turkish government officials in Ankara regarding the question of saving Jews from the Balkan countries. He emphasized that government leaders as well as the general population in Turkey are in sympathy with the plans for rescuing Jews from Nazi countries. Sixty Jewish refugees who reached Turkey from various occupied countries arrived in Palestine on the same train that carried the Chief Rabbi.
