Palestine colonists, spurring the drive for army recruiting in response to a proclamation of the Jewish Agency and Jewish National Council, prepared today to invoke sanctions against men between the ages of 20 and 30 who refused to enlist.
A general meeting of settlers at Berr Tuvia empowered its local council to take measures against single men eligible for military service who “are not ashamed to avoid the call of Jewish institutions for enlistment.”
Meanwhile, Douglas Harris, chairman of the Palestine War Supply Board, announced in a radio broadcast that the Palestine Government would shortly open an industrial exhibition in Cairo to enable the military authorities and private merchants to see how far their needs could be met from Palestine-manufactured products.
The Vaad Leumi (Jewish National Council) called a plenary session for next Tuesday, with representatives of local councils and prominent Jewish leaders participating, to consider the situation.
Yesterday’s fast day was fully observed throughout the country, with intercessory prayers and reading of the Torah, concluding with blowing of the shofar in all synagogues. A procession of 15,000 persons, led by Sephardic Chief Rabbi Ben-Zion Usiel, visited the Wailing Wall and the holy graves.
