Jews of Palestine were pleased to read in the Hebrew daily press of the visit to Jerusalem of two distinguished Jews from Iraq. The visitors are Dr. Makovsky, a Russian Jew, who is King Feisul’s personal physician, and Engineer Beshkin, manager of the King’s cotton fields.
In interviews in the local press, the visitors stated that the position of the Jews in Iraq is satisfactory. Twenty per cent of the government officials are Jews. The relations between the Arab and the Jewish population in the kingdom are highly cordial. Jewish merchants take a leading part in the development of the country’s commerce. Hebrew is being taught in the Jewish schools. The Jews of Iraq take a great interest in the rebuilding of Palestine.
Engineer Beshkin stated that he is now planning to construct oil, soap and chemistry factories in Bagdad with the aid of German-Iraq capital.
