The Palestine Government has deducted 1,500 immigration certificates from the quota allotted to the Jewish Agency under the White Paper “in order to cover Jews who left the ranks of the Polish Army in the Near East and remained in Palestine,” the London Jewish Chronicle reports today from Jerusalem. The paper draws attention to the fact that more than 700 Jews who left the Polish forces in Palestine are serving at present with the Jewish units in the British Army.
The delay by the commission appointed by the Polish Government in London to inquire into the conditions which led to the fact that Jewish soldiers in the Polish Army are asking for a transfer to the British armed forces is causing considerable annoyance in Jewish circles here. Although several weeks have passed since the commission was appointed, it has not yet started work.
It was revealed today that two weeks ago the commission was scheduled to proceed to Scotland, where the bulk of the Polish Army is stationed. The visit was cancelled, however, without any official reason being given. There have been persistent rumors that the polish high command is obstructing the work of the commission which has been charged with establishing whether there is anti-Semitism in the Polish forces. A meeting of the commission will be held here tomorrow, at the request of Dr. Ignacy Schwarzbart, one of the two Jewish members of the body.
