The Palestine immigration quota for the May 15-June 15 period will consist of the usual 1,500 certificates, 335 of which have already been deducted for part of the La Spezia refugees who are on route here, it was announced by the Government.
At a press conference in Tel Aviv yesterday, Chief Secretary John V.W. Shaw disclosed that 232 Jews were being detained in Palestine and 308 outside the country as of the end of last year. He said that 224 more had been arrested in the first quarter of this year and one deported, thus making a total of 765 who are being held.
Of these, Shaw reported that 40 have been held for more than four years, and six for more than six years. He added that there was no limit on the detention period and that the Government was not ready to set any limit. The Chief Secretary declared that although there is no legislation prohibiting Jews from moving about the country freely, he advised them not to do so for “security reasons.”
