The commerce of Palestine was not affected by last Summer’s disturbances it is revealed from the figures just made available for 1929. Imports last year totalled $35,832,665, a substantial increase over the figures for 1928 which were $33,954.09. Exports in 1929 also showed a gain. The figures for 1929 were $7,771,310 as compared with $7,236,035 for 1928.
England is still Palestine’s best customer, having bought 29 per cent of the 1929 exports. Egypt took 24 per cent, Syria 18 per cent and Germany 7 per cent. Twenty-five per cent of the imports were from Egypt, 16 from Syria and 14 from England.
