The Palestine partition issue came up for discussion here last night in the French National Assembly with a number of deputies opposing partition and urging that France advocate at the United Nations the establishment of Palestine as a unitary Arab-Jewish state.
Deputy Alfred Coste declared that France, as a Mediterranean power, must intervene in the Palestine situation. Partition, he said, is not a happy solution, adding “it is time to establish Palestine as a republic in which Arabs and Jews will work toward the same aims.” He urged that Palestine be proclaimed a unitary state with guaranteed Jewish immigration.
Other deputies opposing partition supported the idea of establishing Palestine as a unitary state, but suggested that Palestine be governed by a Christian-Moslem-Jewish triumvirate. Some of the speakers recommended appealing to religious leaders of all denominations in Palestine to seek their intervention for calming the strained feelings existing at present among the Arabs and Jews.
