Palestine Jewish Students Go into Fields to Increase Food Production for War

Fifteen hundred boys and girls from the Jewish schools of this city left their classrooms today to go into the fields. Head by their teachers, the young students will spend their vacations growing food to aid the Allied war effort Another contingent of 3,500 is expected later in the week.

At the same time the mayors of Palestine’s chief cities met today with the food controller to discuss the fixing of prices on several essential food commodities and stricter measures of meat control, including three meatless days per week instead of the two days which have already been decreed. Acting High Commissioner James MacPherson will receive a delegation of Jewish farmers this week to make plans for increased agricultural production.

Further Jewish colonization of agricultural areas in Palestine to accelerate the country’s production of food and other means of increasing the supply of vital agricultural commodities were the main points of discussion today at the convention of the Histadruth, Palestine Labor federation, which is meeting here now.

Moshe Shertok, chief of the political department of the Jewish Agency, addressing the delegates on the question of Palestine’s defense demanded that the Histadruth send 10,000 of its members into the armed forces. It is considered probable here that the labor group will agree to having 3,000 workers join the British army.
