Declaring that efforts to rescue Jews have been inadequate up until now, the Jewish National Council, in a Rosh Hashonah statement issued today, called on all Jews in “the free world” to press for action until every Jew in Europe has been rescued.

Pointing to the contribution to the Allied war effort made by the 30,000 Palestinians under arms, the statement says that in light of the approaching victory of the United Nations, “the Yishuv demands that a new dawn should come also for the Jewish nation.”

In a special message to the Palestinians in the armed forces, the council hailed them as envoys of the Hishuv on the war fronts and added that “the Yishuv eagerly awaits your return immediately after victory to join in the upbuilding and defense of your homeland.”

Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog of Palestine in a Rosh Hashonah message reviewing the destruction of European Jewry, pointed out that as a result the “mantel of leadership” has fallen upon the Jews in the democratic countries. He urged a fight for recognition “of our divine historic right to the land of our fathers, where alone our life and ideals can attain the fullness of expression.”
