Foreign Secretary Lord Halifax, in a review of the general situation in the House of Lords today, declared that the position in Palestine was quiet. Apart from isolated cases of banditry the country enjoys a respite from internal disorder, he said.
Lord Halifax said Arab circles were generally pleased by the release of internees and by the fact that military courts were no longer empowered to impose the death sentence. The Jewish community, he said, is cooperating fully in matters of defense and in various emergency measures demanded by the situation. Arab cooperation is no less wholehearted, he declared.
The economic prospect, especially regarding the citrus crop, is causing some anxiety, but is relieved to some extent by the demand for goods and labor caused by the presence of the troops in Palestine, the Foreign Secretary added.
