Palestine Report out July 8; U.S. Treaty Rights to Be Respected, Commons Told

THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCED TODAY THE REPORT OF THE ROYAL COMMISSION ON PALESTINE WOULD BE PUBLISHED JULY 8 AND AT THE SAME TIME PROMISED TO RESPECT THE RIGHTS OF THE UNITED STATES REGARDING PALESTINE UNDER A TREATY SIGNED IN 1924.

WILLIAM G.A. ORMSBY-GORE, THE COLONIAL SECRETARY, TOLD THE HOUSE OF COMMONS THE GOVERNMENT PROPOSED TO RELEASE THE REPORT IN TIME FOR ITS PUBLICATION AS A COMMAND PAPER CONTAINING A SHORT STATEMENT OF POLICY ON THE MORNING OF JULY 8. RECOMMENDATION FOR PARTITION OF PALESTINE BETWEEN ARABS AND JEWS ARE BELIEVED A FEATURE OF THE REPORT.

COPIES WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT LATE WEDNESDAY EVENING, JULY 7, MR. ORMSBY-GORE ADDED. HIS STATEMENT CAME WHILE THE CABINET WAS UNDERSTOOD TO BE DISCUSSING THE REPORT AT ITS WEEKLY MEETING TODAY.

GEOFFREY MANDER, LIBERAL, ASKED THE COLONIAL SECRETARY WHETHER IT WAS PROPOSED TO CONSULT THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT REGARDING FUTURE POLICY IN PALESTINE IN VIEW OF THE TREATY OF DEC. 3, 1924, BETWEEN GREAT BRITAIN AND THE UNITED STATES BY WHICH THE LATTER BECAME A PARTY TO THE AGREEMENT TO ESTABLISH PALESTINE AS A JEWISH NATIONAL HOME AND WHICH INCLUDED IN ITS FIRST ARTICLE A PROVISION THAT ANY MODIFICATION IN THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS MANDATE FOR PALESTINE MUST BE CONSENTED TO BY THE UNITED STATES.

THE COLONIAL SECRETARY REPLIED:

” IN CONSIDERING THE FUTURE POLICY TO BE PURSUED IN PALESTINE HIS MAJESTY’S GOVERNMENT WILL, OF COURSE, KEEP CONSTANTLY IN MIND ANY RIGHTS OF THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES UNDER THE INSTRUMENT TO WHICH MR. MANDER REFERRED.”

MR. MANDER ASKED:

“HAVE ANY REPRESENTATIONS BEEN RECEIVED FROM THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT UP TO DATE?”

“NO,” REPLIED THE COLONIAL SECRETARY.
