Jewish schools in Palestine failed to reopen today after the summer vacation. The opening was deferred for weeks following the breakdown of the negotiations between teachers and the Vaad Leumi, the Jewish National Council, on the government’s insistence that teachers’ salaries be reduced.
The compromise offer of the Vaad Leumi to restore the projected cuts in the form of family allowances, was rejected by the teachers, who also rejected the principle of economies in teachers salaries. They demanded the maintenance of the present wage scale.
