Palestine supplies Great Britain with seventeen per cent of its total importation of oranges, being second only to Spain, which sends 67%, states a memorandum issued by the Empire Marketing Board.
The memorandum praises the quality of the Palestine oranges and points to the growing popularity of Jaffa oranges. The importance of Palestine as a producer and exporter of oranges is shown by the rapidly developing area under orange cultivation, the Board states. Form 5,400 acres in 1923 the total area has mounted to 13,600 acres in 1928. During the same period the export of oranges has grown from 1,109,000 hundred-weight to 1,851,000.
The orange production is likely to double within the next few years, the report states, because many of the plantations are just beginning to produce. Planting continues extensively, the Board adds.
