Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat has given a green light for further terrorist attacks, Israeli officials said. Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz gave the assessment of Arafat’s intentions to Israel’s Cabinet on Sunday. Maj. Gen. Aharon Ze’evi-Farkash, head of military intelligence, told the Cabinet that Arafat was trying to ignite the intifada anew. Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said Arafat has said “in private conversations” that it was a mistake to appoint Mahmoud Abbas as prime minister of the Palestinian Authority.
