Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas resigned, leaving the U.S.-backed “road map” in tatters. Abbas’ resignation, made Saturday, came after he lost a power struggle with Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat. In reaction to the resignation, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said Sunday on ABC News’ “This Week” program that the next Palestinian prime minister must have enough control over Palestinian security services to crack down on terror. In Israel, calls for Arafat’s expulsion mounted after Abbas’ resignation. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has ruled out dealing with Arafat in negotiations or discussions on the road map. Some Israeli officials have called for taking stronger measures against Arafat, who is widely believed to promote terrorist attacks against Israel. The Palestinian leader should “not be immune from anything,” Cabinet minister Uzi Landau told Israel’s Army Radio.
