Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat rejected the resignation of the top Palestinian official involved in peace talks with Israel. Saeb Erekat asked to be relieved of his post as chief negotiator over differences with other officials on the handling of talks. A Palestinian official said Erekat was upset by a separate negotiating initiative being led by the speaker of the Palestinian legislative council, Ahmed Karia.
