Palestinian leaders hailed President Clinton’s trip to the Gaza Strip as a boost to their aspirations for statehood. U.S. officials denied that the trip represented such an endorsement. At a lunch with Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat, Clinton said that for the first time in their history, the Palestinian people “now have a chance to determine their own destiny on their own land.”
