The Black Panthers assumed the role today of benefactors of the poor. Several members of the organization of slum dwellers distributed $600 in gift certificates to poor families. The certificates were purchased at a large department store. According to Natan Zehavi, a Panther who was once a reporter for the weekly magazine Haolam Hazeh, the money came from an anonymous donor in the United States. It was not known how many families received the gift certificates.
