The New York Daily News suggested editorially today that the United States Government look into the possibility of an agreement with Germany for settling Reich and Austrian Jewish refugees in this country.
“Private charities here should be ready with funds to take care of these refugees until they could find places in our communities — since Hitler lets nobody, Jew or Gentile, take any money to speak of out of Germany,” the editorial said.
“The Zionist movement, which just doesn’t seem able to make any real headway in Palestine, might consider diverting considerable of its funds to this apparently more practical purpose. Plenty of Gentiles, we should think, would be willing to help.
“Arrangements could be worked out for distributing the Jewish refugees around the country; probably it would be unwise to have them concentrate in any two or three places. Though we have plenty of unemployed, many of these people could, we think, gradually work into our business, transport and farm setup.”
