Rabbi Alain Goldmann was elected Chief Rabbi of Paris for a seven-year term today. The 49-year-old rabbi, who holds a degree in German language and civilization, was born in Strasbourg and began his career as an army chaplain in the southwest military district in 1959.
He become a Navy chaplain in 1967 and Chief Jewish Chaplain of France’s armed forces in 1978. Like the new Chief Rabbi of France, Rene Sirat, Rabbi Goldmann has played a major role in the field of education. He said after his election that he would work closely with Sirat to promote Jewish education and tradition in France. He said he would also strive to keep the French Jewish community united, observing that there was no difference between Ashkenazic and Sephardic Jews.
