A campaign to wipe out the Jewish ghetto quarter in Paris has been opened by the press in the Nazi-occupied former French capital.
“The ghetto must disappear” it was asserted simultaneously by the newspapers Le Matin and La France au Travail in their issues of Aug. 4. The papers devoted long illustrated articles to the “horrors” of the Jewish quarter, situated between the Bastille and the Rue de Rivoli.
Anti-Jewish propaganda seems to be a principal occupation of the few papers remaining in Paris. In addition to La France au Travail, published by the former “Franciste” leader, Henri Coston, Les Dernieres Nouvelles de Paris is also especially violent in its agitation.
“Advertisements not accepted from firms under Jewish management,” announces the Dernieres Nouvelles. Three other papers reserve columns for “Deutsche Anzeige” (German Notes).
The extent of anti-Semitic propaganda in Paris is indicated by an advertisement of the well-known optical firm, Lissac Freres, which states that “Lissac is not Isaac” and asks customers not to pay attention to contrary rumors.
