The Parliamentary by-election in Whitechapel, where the Liberal candidate is a Zionist leader, will be held December 3, it was announced today. The Labor party is seriously worried over the possible outcome of the election to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Harry Gosling, because the constituency is overwhelmingly Jewish and there is great resentment there against the government because of its Palestine policy.
The plan of the government to nominate Sir Stafford Cripps, Solicitor-General, for the vacant seat, has been given up, and James Hall has received the designation. T. L. B. Guiness, who unsuccessfully contested the same constituency at the last general election, is the Conservative nominee.
At the last election the Labor candidate polled 13,701 votes, receiving a majority of 9,180 votes. There is much speculation now whether the Laborites have a chance in Whitechapel in view of Jewish resentment against the White Paper and because of the Liberals’ move in nominating Barnet Janner, a Zionist for the place.
