The recommended partition of Jerusalem into separate Arab and Jewish boroughs has met with the same mixed reception among Jewish leaders as the much discussed partition plan for the entire country.
Rabbi Meir Berlin, influential Mizrachi leader, issued a statement unconditionally rejecting the recommendations contained in the Fitzgerald report, while Isaac Ben Zvi, president of the Jewish National Council, said that the plan is worth considering. The Arab press has unanimously rejected the scheme.
The local Hebrew press reports that during his recent visit here, Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery conferred with Arab leaders of all shades of political opinion on the political situation in Palestine and the Middle East. Montgomery saw no Jewish spokesman while in Palestine.
