Following organizational meetings here and in Los Angeles, a statewide central committee has been established to campaign for passage by the State Legislature of pending fair employment practices legislation.
A bill introduced by Assemblyman Augustus Hawkins, modelled after the New York State laws, is now awaiting legislative action. The bill is being opposed by a rightwing group led by State Senator Jack Tenney and others. The Tenney forces are seeking adoption of a constitutional amendment, known as the “America Plus” plan, which would legalize religious and racial discrimination in many fields.
