The public, interested and eagerly awaiting an authoritative statement as to the attitude of the British government in the present Palestine situation, is puzzled and confused by the contradicting reports published in the London press as to what Lord Passfield, Colonial Secretary, and Dr. Weizmann agreed upon concerning the Zionists’ demands, during their interview on Wednesday.
Following the announcement of the British Colonial Office disavowing a report which was attributed to Dr. Weizmann from which the inference could be drawn that Lord Passfield had conceded Dr. Weizmann’s demands, the diplomatic correspondent of the London “Morning Post” writes the following:
“The statement attributed to Dr. Weizmann was promptly denied by the Colonial Office and Dr. Weizmann himself because Lord Passfield declared that until a full inquiry of the recent events has taken place, the government had an open mind.
“The statement reporting the conversation was absurd, because matters to which it referred are questions dealt with by the Cabinet and any alteration in the British policy in Palestine is a question which is to be confirmed by the League of Nations,” the correspondent writes.
