Emigrating Austrian Jews must pay a special “passport tax,” fixed individually according to the amount of capital each possesses, it was learned here today. Proceeds of the tax, notice of which has been sent out by the Vienna Jewish Community, will be used to help finance emigration of persons without means. Levying of the tax follows establishment of the new central government office for emigration of Jews.
Thirty-three Vienna synagogues have been dissolved since Anschluss, according to information reaching here. Large halls previously used for overflow services will not be available for the High Holy Days, the Vienna Jewish Community announcing that services will be confined to synagogues operated by the Community.
