All Jewish teachers in the public schools of this city will in the public schools of this city will in the future be given three days off with half-pay on Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur, according to a resolution passed by the Paterson Board of Education last week. This ends a six-year fight which has been carried on by the Jewish teachers of Paterson against the deduction of substitutes’ pay on Jewish High Holidays.
Feeling that the matter could not be treated as a Jewish problem since it might smack of discrimination, the special committee of the Board of Education presented a resolution which establishes three “merit days” by which every teacher will be permitted that number of days of absence by application to the superintendent with the loss of half-pay. Charles H. Roemer, city attorney, has been the main figure behind the teachers’ agitation against the deduction of substitutes’ pay on Jewish holidays.
