One day after Israel and Jordan signed the Washington Declaration ending their 46-year state of war, Israeli authorities announced plans to build six major highways linking the two countries.
One of the roads, which will link Eilat and Aqaba, has already been proposed in talks among Israel, Jordan and the United States.
The road, which will be about a mile long, will cost $1 million and will run from the area of Eilot, north of Eilat, due east into Jordan, Meir Gazit, spokesman for Israel’s Public Works Department, said Tuesday.
Housing Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, who has ministerial responsibility for the Public Works Department, said Tuesday that he had given the order for the planning of the new roads to insure that when an Israeli-Jordanian peace is eventually signed, the roads from Amman to Jerusalem and Ashdod would be open for travel.
