Former Governor Alfred E. Smith, Mayor James J. Walker and educators joined yesterday to pay tribute to the late M. Samuel Stern, vice-president of the Board of Education. Funeral services were held yesterday from the Park Avenue Synagogue. Mayor Walker and Mr. Smith were among the honorary pallbearers.
Maurice B. Blumenthal, representing the Independent Order Free Sons of Israel, delivered a eulogy. Delegations from the Board of Education were present.
Memorial exercises were held in the New York public schools, the principals reading a letter from Superintendent of Schools William J. O’Shea.
Burial was at Mount Hope Cemetery. Dr. Gabriel Schulman officiated.
