A Jewish theatre troupe received 500 zloty not to give a performance on a certain Friday night recently, the Neier Frimorgen reports.
A large number of Chassidim, learning the company planned to give several Friday and Saturday performances, held a demonstration in front of the theatre where the troupe was to play. Failing to shake the determination of the actors, the demonstrants appealed to Rabbi Moishe Bleicher, head of the rabbinical court, to intervene.
Coming to the theatre, Rabbi Bleicher finally prevailed upon the actors to cancel the Friday evening performance, but not until he had promised to cover the losses the cancellation would entail.
On the Sabbath the demonstration was repeated, but police broke it up. When the rabbi refused to pay the money he had promised the actors took him before the rabbinical court, which ruled, after much bargaining, that the artists receive 500 zloty towards their claim for 1,000, which they said the cancellation of the Friday performance involved.
