A single-engined Peper Cub piloted by an Indian. Swami Devananda Vishnu, and a Jewish co-pilot. Bern Jacobson, reportedly landed safely in Cairo today after dropping peace leaflets and flowers over Israeli and Egyptian positions along the Suez Canal. The plane took off from Lydda Airport at 12:29 p.m. local time and headed for Cyprus but reversed course and flew over the Sinai Peninsula reaching the canal at 3:10 p.m. The Cairo Airport control tower radioed Cyprus that the plane had no permission to land and would be shot at. But according to the latest reports. It landed. The whereabouts of Vishnu and Jacobson were not immediately known.
The Indian, who has been living in Canada, announced several weeks ago that he intended to make a peace flight over Suez in the style of Israel’s erstwhile “peace pilot” Able Nathan who landed twice in Egypt during the 1960s. Some of Vishnu’s leaflets in Hebrew reached Israeli positions near Kantara, They called for peace, understanding and love between peoples.
